This bike is generating good reports already …. smooth, quiet and achieving identical times on the owner’s regular ride….and the belt will by all reports be fantastic in mud… bring on Winter. This frame sports the necessary split-able rear dropout so the belt can be threaded through the rear triangle, and the heavy-duty right-side chainstay required by Gates to give the necessary extra rigidity.
This 29er is huge, a 23″ frame sizing for a big guy who is 6’6″ in the old measure…. I promised the customer the pleasures of the latest 29er geometry, including ‘proper’ short chainstays. The frame still manages to fit the Humungous 2.25 Schwalbe tyres and with this gear combination also pretty much hits the magic 430mm short chainstay dimension that is so essential on a mountainbike yet doesn’t really seem to make it onto 29ers with their ‘short’ 445mm chainstays . Why? Because it’s bl00dy difficult! But worth the effort. It also sports a 44mm headtube which enables the use of a tapered steerer fork, and the first peek of my new swinger dropouts in stainless-steel. Developed right here in Melbourne with Scott of Symes Cycles. Scott is also a Professional Engineer and these adjustable dropouts do everything … belt-drive split, derailleur hanger, Rohloff long-slot on the left-side, disc or non-disc left side dropout and rack/mudguard mounts. All for less weight and/or less torque load on the stays than any of the mainstream slider options, none of which tick all the boxes the way these do. Paint by Aaron, Total Bike Paint

Some serious miles are being put in on my frames lately, with six that I know of being ridden in this year’s AAC (Audax Alpine Classic). Four of those were also travel bikes including one of the earlier Breakaway coupling option bikes, caught here coming down Tawonga Gap. Another of the AAC six is soon to be converted with S and S couplers for compact travel packing. The travel-bike option is proving popular with those that put in the big miles and who plan some big overseas rides.

Gavin Bannerman from Brisbane visited in November and added me to his series of videos which includes other Australian framebuilders. This isn’t an overly produced video. It’s Gavin doing an interview posing questions in an oral history style and with virtually no editing his work is refreshingly genuine (and nerve-wracking to be on the receiving end of). Sort of an ‘unearthed’ style. I dug out some old pics for Gavin to include in the video. His visit page includes some words and pics, and his Melbourne visit included Darrell Perkins and Scott & Tristram of Commuter Cycles. Just click on the video below to start watching (15 minutes, 180Mb). Pics of the visit were captured by Andy Rogers, a photographer from Melbourne who came out as well.

Di2 custom; Shimano’s top of the line groupset made better since it’s difficult to mount the external battery neatly…. Modifying the Di2 to locate the battery inside the seatpost makes for a much cleaner setup. Electronic shifting and no clunky external battery. The frame design has the cable access and clearance to make it all work, and my customer was pretty handy since he’s an electrician in the automotive industry and has sorted the seatpost mod. The batteries themselves weigh surprisingly little. Paul has made several more sets available, which require modification of the standard wiring harness.

Mark has a beautiful Llewellyn bike but found it got knocked-around on overseas trips: this bike with its Breakaway joints will pack more neatly and securely for air-travel…. The paint job is an upgrade from the standard finish and it’s come out looking great .. matching with Ritchey seatpost and making a feature of the joints at the seat-cluster and the downtube. The frame is mostly constructed of the top-shelf Life tubing made by Columbus, with Columbus’ carbon-fibre Minimal fork.
